Garlic Bulbs

Locally grown hard-neck garlic bulbs for planting! Sold by the bulb, each bulb has between 4-10 cloves depending on the cultivar. Choose from several different varieties below.

  • Marble Purple Stripe: Hardneck, early maturing variety. Hot when eated raw, good overall flavour when cooked. Stores for 5-6 months. Certified organic, grown in New Brunswick.
  • Music: Hardneck, porcelain type garlic that stores well and features a robust flavour. Certified organic, grown in New Brunswick.
  • Rocombole: Hardneck variety with a complex flavour. A favourite among chefs. Stores 4-6 months. Certified organic, grown in New Brunswick.
  • Elephant: Not a true garlic, enormous bulbs with mellow mild flavour. Plant deeper and further apart than true garlic varieties. Certified organic, grown in New Brunswick.

Planting instructions: Garlic thrives in rich soil in full sun. Ensure the area is weed free, and amend with compost. The best time to plant is mid fall, once the temperatures have started to drop. Early to mid October is ideal in Nova Scotia. Break apart the bulb into separate cloves, and plant 1-2" deep and 6" apart. Place bulb pointy end up, root end down. Mulching is recommended for weed prevention and winter insulation.

Harvest instructions: Keep the beds wee free in spring. Side-dress as leaves begin to appear in early spring. Harvest the scape (flower head) in the late spring - early summer. Harvest the bulbs once the leaves start to brown at the tips, usually 3-4 weeks after the removal of the scape. Tie or braid in bunches and hang to cure in a dark, dry area for 10-30 days.
