Heritage Packet: Bean - Scarlet Runner (Seed)
In celebration of our 160th anniversary, Halifax Seed is pleased to offer a limited edition collection of Heritage Seed Packets inspired by the archives of our catalogue. Each of the 9 varieties in this collection have appeared in historical Halifax Seed catalogues as early as 1906. These tried and true favourites are as reliable as ever, and each variety comes in a vintage-inspired seed packet.
A vigorous green pole bean, Scarlet Runner is prized for its abundance of bright red blooms that attract hummingbirds and add a welcome splash of colour to the vegetable or ornamental garden. Medium green beans that are curved, 12cm (15") long and stringless if picked young are produced on vines that can reach over 300cm (10") in the air! 18g per packet.
Care: Direct sow after last frost in a sunny location with well-draining soil. Plant near a trellis or fence to support climbing vines. Water regularly and fertilize when 3” (7.5cm) tall. Thin seedlings to 6” (15cm) apart.
Harvest: For optimum flavour, harvest and cook beans when they are still young and tender.
Scarlet Runner first appeared in the Halifax Seed catalogue in 1906, where it was called “a great favourite as an ornamental plant.”
