In celebration of our 160th anniversary, Halifax Seed is pleased to offer a limited edition collection of Heritage Seed Packets inspired by the archives of our catalogue. Each of the 9 varieties in this collection have appeared in historical Halifax Seed catalogues as early as 1906. These tried and true favourites are as reliable as ever, and each variety comes in a vintage-inspired seed packet.

Snow peas have an edible pod that is crisp and tender. Thin pods are deliciously mild eaten raw or cooked in a variety of ways. This sweet variety is perfect for stir fries, salads, or steamed dishes. Dwarf pods are 7-10cm (2.5-3”) long on vines that reach 1.5-2m (5-6.5’) high. 17g per packet.

Care: Direct sow into well-draining soil as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring. Replant at 3 week intervals until mid-spring. Water regularly and fertilize when plants are 10cm (4”) tall. Stake or trellis the plants to support vine growth.

Harvest: Pick when pods are still nearly flat, just as peas begin to bulge.

Grey Sugar Dwarf first appeared in the Halifax Seed catalogue in 1926, where its description read “In the Edible Podded or Sugar Peas the pods are gathered, broken, and cooked like string beans when the peas start to develop in the pod or have reached about half their full size of these sorts. The Dwarf Sugar grows about 18 inches in height and produces a heavy crop of small flat pods about 3 inches in length.”
