In celebration of our 160th anniversary, Halifax Seed is pleased to offer a limited edition collection of Heritage Seed Packets inspired by the archives of our catalogue. Each of the 9 varieties in this collection have appeared in historical Halifax Seed catalogues as early as 1906. These tried and true favourites are as reliable as ever, and each variety comes in a vintage-inspired seed packet.

This traditional heirloom radish has 5cm (2-3”) oblong-shaped roots that are bright red with a splash of white on the tip. The taste is crisp and mild, making them perfect for slicing in salads. Planting in succession will ensure a continual supply.

Care: Direct seed into rich, well amended soil beginning as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring. Repeat every 2 weeks except during hot weather. Water regularly and fertilize when plants have 4-6 leaves.

Harvest: Thin when roots are 12mm (1/2”) wide so others will have room to grow. Harvest when young and mild.

French Breakfast first appeared in the Halifax Seed catalogue in 1906, where it was described as “the finest quality, good for forcing.” In our 1926 catalogue, the French Breakfast radish description read “A beautiful radish of true olive shape. The color of the skin is bright carmine, shading to clear white in the lower portion. The flesh is white, firm, and crisp; juicy, mildly pungent, and tender. It is well adapted for forcing in the green-house and hotbed.”
