Description

In celebration of our 160th anniversary, Halifax Seed is pleased to offer a limited edition collection of Heritage Seed Packets inspired by the archives of our catalogue. Each of the 9 varieties in this collection have appeared in historical Halifax Seed catalogues as early as 1906. These tried and true favourites are as reliable as ever, and each variety comes in a vintage-inspired seed packet.

Scotia is one of the most popular tomatoes in the Maritimes due to its early maturing (60 Days) fruit and tolerance for cold weather. Plants are strong and vigorous with a determinate growth habit. Tomatoes are globe shaped and medium sized with slightly green shoulders. Fruit is flavourful and often used for relish and canning. 0.5g per packet.

Care: For earliest harvest, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in soil 18-24C. Grow in full sun. Transplant out after last frost. Water regularly and fertilize when 15cm (6”) tall, then again in mid-summer. Stake or cage the plants to support growth.

Harvest: Pick when fruit is richly coloured and firm.

Scotia first appeared in the Halifax Seed catalogue in 1961, where the description read “A selection from Quebec 5 X Meteor cross made in 1953 at the Kentville Experimental Farm. The plant is determinate with a tendency to open out. The fruit is medium size, rounded smooth, fairly firm and normal ripening or green shouldered. In trials at Kentville and in 1957 and 58 Canadian Vegetable Merit Trials the variety has rated well as a first early type. We recommend this variety highly to market gardeners and other tomato growers.”
